Talk About FDY, DTY And ATY: Core Differences in Process, Characteristics And Terminal Applications

There are many types of polyester filament, and FDY, DTY, and ATY are the three most widely used mainstream filament types in civilian and industrial fabrics. Many people only know the different uses, but cannot distinguish the core difference: why do smooth fabrics have to use FDY? Does 90% of elastic knitted fabric rely on DTY? Do you prefer ATY for outdoor workwear and imitation cotton and linen texture fabrics? The essential difference among the three lies in the different production processes, which directly determine the structure, feel, elasticity, fabric style, and terminal adaptation scenarios of the silk strands. Today we will talk about the process principles, characteristics, advantages and disadvantages, and precise applications of three types of long filaments.

FDY fully stretched wire: a flat, shiny, and highly stable "rigid wire"

FDY stands for fully stretched yarn, which adopts melt spinning and one-step synchronous stretching and shaping process. After melting and extruding polyester chips, cooling, stretching, heat setting, and winding forming are completed in one go on high-speed spinning equipment, without the need for secondary balling or deformation processing. It is the most direct type of filament product in finished state. Simple understanding: Spinning is the finished product, which is completed in one step and the structure is fully formed. The molecular orientation and crystallinity are extremely high, and the internal structure of the filament is compact and stable, with no space for subsequent deformation.

Core characteristics of silk thread: 1.The surface is extremely smooth and straight: without curling or fluffiness, with parallel and regular monofilaments, and a glossy and transparent cloth surface; 2. Dimensional stability: Low shrinkage rate in boiling water, uniform tension, and less likely to deform or shrink after weaving; 3. High strength and good toughness: wear-resistant, tensile resistant, and physically stable; 4. No elasticity or fluffiness: The structure is tight and rigid, with almost no elastic shrinkage force.

Summary of advantages and disadvantages:

✅ Advantages: Flat fabric surface, uniform gloss, stable size, good color consistency, no hidden horizontal stripes, wear-resistant and durable

❌Shortcomings: The hand feel is too hard, lacks elasticity, is not fluffy, and has poor fit comfort, making it impossible to make elastic fabrics

Precision terminal application: focusing on flat, shiny, stiff, and non-deformable woven fabrics, rarely used for large circular knitting machines:

-High end color woven shirts, suit fabrics, and dress lining fabrics

-Home textile blackout fabric, curtains, bedding, high-end decorative fabric

-Industrial materials: seat belts, conveyor belts, tire curtain fabrics, high-strength ropes.

DTY low elasticity silk: a versatile and versatile "flexible silk" with fluffy elasticity

DTY, also known as stretch deformation yarn, is the largest and most widely used filament in the industry. It is produced using a two-step method. Step 1: Spinning to produce semi-finished POY pre oriented yarn (not fully formed, with remaining stretching space);Step 2: Heating, stretching, false twisting deformation, and heat setting are carried out through an elastic machine to form a uniform and dense spiral curling structure on the straight filament, ultimately shaping it into low elasticity filament.

Simple understanding: First spin, then add elasticity, and create a fluffy feeling through mechanical thermal deformation.

Core characteristics of silk thread: 1. Equipped with micro elasticity and high fluffiness: spiral curled structure with good recoverability, the fabric is soft and not stiff;

2. Soft and skin friendly feel: solves the weakness of FDY being too hard, and provides extremely high comfort for close fitting;3. Strong weaving adaptability: uniform strips, low breakage rate, suitable for various large circular and high-speed looms;4. Balance of physical properties: Balancing elasticity, strength, and shrinkage, with the highest comprehensive cost-effectiveness.

Summary of advantages and disadvantages:

✅Advantages: Soft and fluffy, slightly elastic and comfortable, high-cost performance, good dyeability, suitable for the vast majority of civilian fabrics

❌Shortcoming: After high-temperature setting, the elasticity will slightly decrease, and the adaptability to high-strength industrial scenarios is weaker than FDY.

Precise terminal application: Knitted fabrics are the absolute mainstay and also the core material for yoga and sports fabrics, covering 80% of civilian clothing

-Various single-sided/double-sided circular knitting fabrics: yoga fabrics, fitness clothes, quick drying sportswear

-Hoodie fabric, suede, brushed fabric, warm knit fabric - ordinary home textile fabric, fashion fabric, shoe and hat elastic fabric

At present, the nylon 66 and polyester elastic knitted abrasive fabric used in the fabrics of high-end yoga pants on the market are all made of DTY, which is also the most concentrated silk type in weaving, dyeing and finishing horizontal stripes, and color difference problems.

ATY Air Deformation Silk: A "textured silk" that imitates cotton, linen, matte and rough texture

ATY is the full name of air textured silk, commonly known as tasilon silk in the industry. Its process is completely different from FDY and DTY: using FDY or POY raw silk as the substrate, high-pressure and high-speed air flow blowing is used to make parallel monofilaments disorderly, intertwined, looped, and fluffy, ultimately forming irregular loops and short fiber structures, without false twisting or high-temperature curling throughout the entire process.

Simple understanding: not relying on mechanical twisting, relying on airflow to blow tangled strands, simulating the texture of cotton and linen short fibers.

Core characteristics of silk thread: 1. Completely imitating short fiber texture: the surface has fine loops, matte without gloss, completely eliminating the reflection of synthetic fibers;2. Top level fluffiness: The silk structure is loose, with excellent breathability and drape;3. Irregular texture: The fabric surface has a natural texture, with a high-quality texture;4. Non elastic and anti-pilling: The structure is intertwined and stable, making it more washable and durable than ordinary DTY.

Summary of advantages and disadvantages:

✅Advantages: Matte premium, cotton and linen like texture, breathable and dry, anti-pilling, three-dimensional textured fabric surface

❌Shortcomings: Inelasticity, lower strength than FDY, easy to produce fuzz during weaving, not suitable for close fitting elastic fabrics

Precision terminal applications: featuring matte, textured, workwear, and outdoor style fabrics, with a focus on differentiated textures:

-Outdoor assault suit, workwear jacket, quick drying jacket

-Imitation cotton, imitation linen high-end fashion fabrics, pants - luggage fabrics, tents, outdoor functional fabrics

-Light luxury matte home textiles, textured decorative fabrics
